Mission and Vision

The center aims to advance, apply, and facilitate academically high-value standards, to support the institute for interdisciplinary research.

To accelerate the advancement of knowledge by implementing multidisciplinary research in energy, environment, economics, and technology.

There are six main research topics that are studied within the research center:

  1. Climate risk assessment - The increase in frequency and severity of extreme weather events due to climate change gives evidence of critical challenges faced by infrastructure systems. To quantify the climate risk related to extreme temperatures, drought, and extreme precipitation. The implementation of risk assessments and clarity of focus on modifying strategies are still limited in the Mediterranean region.
  2. Efficient use of resources - The application of circular economy in modern hi-tech industrial production intends to promote sustainable economies. The implementation of technology transfer, efficient allocation of limited resources, and maximizing the time of using resources or components. A policy-based framework to describe saving cost, ecosystem, and natural resource conservation through recycling, eco-design and innovation, remanufacturing, and repair.
  3. Energy – Renewable such as solar and biogas. The studies can develop in different directions: (i) Cost-effective and efficient mode of electricity generation with high or low opportunity costs. (ii) Environmental impact of utilizing energy sources and the inherent social welfare costs. Policy-related studies on environmental pollution effects on the mortality of children, and adults, survival rate, and health expenditure efficiencies. (iii) Strategic options to diversify the energy mix and minimize dependence on imported fuel oil, trade balance, and policy. (iv) To develop a generic model framework for biogas production from agricultural waste with a sustainable approach for developing countries.
  4. Water management – Perspective to explain how water scarcity increases economic and social costs and how economic and social interventions can minimize those costs. Perspective to scenarios on urban drinking water, food security, and ecosystem services illustrate how various nations might cope -- or fail -- under pressure from increasing water scarcity. (i) ) Modelling a general framework that can be applied anywhere, the TRNC condition being an illustrative example. The idea is to determine the financial and economic parameters that would enable reverse osmosis treatment of wastewater to be financially and economically feasible in semi-desert districts. (ii) Modelling a cost-efficient diversification of the water infrastructure system against uncertainty. The current studies or approaches mostly focus on average or predictive estimation for water management without considering the uncertainties that may yield more significant failures in infrastructure systems.
  5. Food security – To enable human wellbeing, the food system needs to be fundamentally transformed to operate within environmental limits. To highlight the vital role of producers and firms in mitigating the sector’s harmful impacts on human and planetary health and supporting broader sustainable development.
  6. Nanotechnology has demonstrated potential to go beyond the bounds of traditional technologies, making it one of the most innovative advancements of our time. The development of nanotechnology has been actively pursued by numerous research institutions across the world. The Micro-Nano Technology Research Group (MNTRG) of Cyprus International University is to bring together the faculty members, research scholars, students, and industry experts to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of micro/nanotechnology, microelectronics, nano/micro design and manufacturing, and micro/nano-scale mechanics and materials.

There is a Finance laboratory that is equipped with the latest technological tools to enable researchers to conduct their research in the center. These include statistical packages, such as SPSS, RiskEase, Eviews, Stata, R-Cran, and Oxmetics, and database subscriptions such as the EIKON database.

Specialist Services

Current advances in technology have led to an unavertable interdisciplinary synergy between different fields. In this manner, the research center focuses on and contributes to all kinds of research segments involving interdisciplinary relations in the fields of Economics, Business, Innovation and Technology. The Center's focus is not limited to interdisciplinary research, but also to relevant search topics from the mentioned fields or industrial-related research that fall in the interest area of CARBET. The key concentration of the research center is on environmental management studies such as ecological systems, green economy, energy engineering, water management and sustainability. The center provides advisory services, executive programs, teaching and training, workshops, and seminars. CARBET also collaborates with research centers at overseas universities/organizations.
