About the Department
The Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation has been offering an undergraduate program since the 2012–2013 academic year. Our program provides students with both the theoretical foundations and practical skills required in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, supported by up-to-date educational approaches.
Today, with the increase in life expectancy, sedentary lifestyles, and the prevalence of chronic diseases, the importance of physiotherapy as a profession has grown significantly. Physiotherapists are healthcare professionals who provide services in all situations where movement and function are at risk, using a wide range of therapeutic methods.
The main goal of our program is to teach students multidimensional physiotherapy and rehabilitation approaches that enhance functional capacity, promote independence, facilitate participation in social life, and ultimately improve the quality of life of individuals.
With advancing technology leading to increasingly sedentary societies, the demand for physiotherapy continues to rise. Our department focuses on improving functions affected by musculoskeletal and other system disorders, and on designing and implementing effective physiotherapy and rehabilitation programs for patients, individuals with special needs, and healthy populations alike.
Our mission is to educate highly qualified physiotherapists who effectively utilize technology, possess multidisciplinary teamwork skills, adopt a student-centered approach, and uphold physical, emotional, social, and ethical values at the highest standards of quality.
As a department, we aim to foster lifelong learning and development, and to become a leading academic unit that contributes to society through national and international education models and scientific research in a multicultural environment.
Education Opportunities
To become a physiotherapist, students must enroll in faculties or schools offering education in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation. The undergraduate program lasts four years, and graduates may pursue master’s and doctoral degrees if they wish to further their academic careers.
Throughout their studies, students take courses not only in basic medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, orthopedics, and neuroanatomy, but also in specialized theoretical and practical subjects including electrophysical agents, kinesiology, normal motor development, manipulative therapy, measurement and evaluation, therapeutic exercises, neurophysiological approaches, pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation, orthotics-prosthetics and rehabilitation, pediatric rehabilitation, and sports health and rehabilitation.
The primary goal of the Department of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation is to equip students with a strong sense of scientific and social responsibility, to develop their critical thinking skills, and to provide them with the ability to conduct education and research within an ethical, egalitarian, democratic, and secular framework in an internationally recognized academic environment.
Our program offers students both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in physiotherapy and rehabilitation, along with exposure to the latest educational practices in the field.
Practical training is one of the core components of physiotherapy education. In addition to classroom lectures, the department features three fully equipped laboratories designed for hands-on learning. Furthermore, a Virtual Reality (VR) Anatomy Laboratory has been established to enable students to utilize new technologies in their anatomy education.
The department also houses the Healthy Life Center (SAYAM), where patient treatments are conducted. SAYAM provides valuable opportunities for students to gain experience in patient evaluation, treatment, and research.
During their education, students complete summer internships in the 2nd and 3rd years, and in their 4th year, they engage in clinical practice and fieldwork. Through collaborations with hospitals and private clinics, students benefit from diverse clinical experiences and enhanced supervision during internships. Additionally, protocols have been signed with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of National Education to further expand internship opportunities.
Beyond academic activities, students can participate in a wide range of scientific, cultural, artistic, and sports clubs and organizations, allowing them to develop personally and professionally.
Moreover, students who wish to broaden their academic background have the opportunity to pursue double major or minor programs alongside their physiotherapy and rehabilitation education.
Accreditations and Memberships
As part of the accreditation process, significant steps are being taken to enhance the academic development of our faculty members by increasing the number and diversity of academic activities and seminars. In addition, efforts are focused on improving student satisfaction, strengthening graduate employability, and facilitating student and faculty exchange programs between universities.
The Undergraduate Program in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation has been granted a 5-year accreditation following the evaluation conducted by the Accreditation Agency in Health and Social Sciences (AHPGS).
Additionally, both the Turkish and English undergraduate programs in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation have been accepted as full members of the European Network of Physiotherapy in Higher Education (ENPHE).
Through this membership, it is expected that student and staff mobility will increase, international collaboration opportunities will expand, and the global visibility and quality of our education will be further strengthened.
Career Areas
Physiotherapists can work in various units of public and private hospitals that provide preventive, treatment and rehabilitation services (neurology, orthopedics and traumatology, rheumatology, sports injuries, cardio-pulmonary, chest diseases, intensive care, etc.), sports-health centers, various sports clubs, retirement homes and spa-thermal facilities in our country as well as abroad. With the new regulations, physiotherapists can now also work in the Guidance and Research Centers. However, since the need for academics is high, he can work as a research assistant, lecturer or manager in the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Departments of universities. He can work as an academician by obtaining a science expertise and doctorate degree in the specialized branches of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation, and can contribute to the development of evidence-based practices by reaching the rank of associate professor and professor in the field of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation.
