About the Program

Clinical psychology is a field that is growing rapidly in the field of health sciences and has a high demand rate in the field. It is an area that is needed by many sectors in line with the increasing population and the problems experienced by this population. Given the large number of data, it seems urgent to overcome the need for a 'specialist clinical psychologist'. Unfortunately, the number of clinical psychologists who have received expertise in this area according to international academic and practical training criteria is far from meeting the needs of the field. The Clinical Psychology Program of our university aims to train professionals who will work primarily in this sensitive direction. Program with Project is completed in two academic terms, and the program with thesis is completed in four academic terms. Courses are offered jointly in both programs, and only the project and thesis courses differ. In the non-thesis and thesis program, in addition to theoretical and applied field courses, elective courses are also offered.

Education Opportunities

The master’s degree in clinical psychology is based on the principles of the Boulder Conference, which sheds light on the training of clinicians. In accordance with these principles, the program is an equal combination of learning, scientific study and clinical practice. This offers an ideal setting to help students gain clinical competence and help to train expert clinical psychologists with advanced theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In addition, while clinical contributions are made through the clinical projects prepared under the supervision of professionals; there are also clinical practices that are supervised and observed by professionals. This graduate program is suitable for the individuals with a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Guidance and Psychological Counselling (with the condition of scientific preparation for a year) who want to work, teach, research and help with social care of individuals with mental and / or emotional problems in clinical settings. For this reason, the structure of our program focuses on strengthening the theoretical knowledge and practical skills (intelligence and personality tests, interviewing techniques, psychotherapies and research techniques) that the field professionals would need. The vision of the CIU master's program in Clinical Psychology is to become a nationally recognized leader in education and to learn and develop the scientific principles of behavior and mental processes in cooperation with its employees and students; to contribute to the science of psychology and its practices; and to produce professionals serving local, national and global communities.

Career Areas

The program provides the basis for the scientific understanding of behavior and mental processes, the establishment of psychopathological situations and psychotherapy-based treatment, and the promotion of service. Our graduate program aims to prepare students as Licensed Clinical Psychologists who provide evidence-based services for children, adults and families in various health and education settings. In this context, graduates of the Clinical Psychology Master’s Program work as psychologists at schools, kindergartens, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons, correctional facilities as specialists; or instructors and academic members at universities; as well as officials at public and private institutions and organizations.

ADVANCED PSYCHOPATHOLOGY

This course aims to describe abnormal behavior and explain the history of abnormal behavior. Consideration of the course is psychological disorders in terms of biological and psychosocial predispositions. Through the course, students are introduced with DSM-5 classification system and diagnostic criteria and related sample cases are studied. By focusing on current psychopathology categories, investigation of dimensional, descriptive and categorical approaches to classification are aimed. Students are also introduced to symptomatology, differential diagnosis, etiology, epidemiology and treatment approaches for various diagnostic categories. Namely; anxiety disorders, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, psychosomatic disorders, substance abuse, sexual dysfunctions, eating disorders and personality disorders. The psychological analysis of sample cases are based on various theories and the course focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of psychopathology. The focus is on the most common pathologies observed within the outpatient treatment clinics, and related diagnosis of due behavior problems and etiology are emphasized.

ADVANCED PSYCHOTHERAPY THEORIES AND TECHNIQUES

This course aims to educate students about psychotherapy through means such as given readings, observation of real therapy sessions, topical presentations and class discussions. The course has three main focal points: a) to explore various psychotherapy models and behavior modification approaches, b) to develop psychopathological assessment and understanding skills, and c) to understand the process of the psychotherapy process (conceptual and practical process). Students should present ongoing therapy sessions during the course and, within the scope of the presentation, review of the case, pre-conceptualizations, the application of chosen psychotherapy modality and the process of the psychotherapy should be involved. The main aim of the course, empirically supported treatments are addressed and applied. In addition, patient profiles (high resistance, etc.) are examined both theoretically and practically. In general, the aim of the course is to familiarize the student with current theories and techniques of psychotherapy and to apply the acquired theoretical knowledge on the conceptualization of the case.

This course focuses on the ability to effectively carry out the process of the clinical interview, one of the cornerstones of the psychotherapy process. At the end of the course, the student acquires a certain knowledge about the clinical interview process and the observational techniques. In this context, issues such as determining the patient's basic complaints, questioning the history of the disorder, behavioral and cognitive assessment, handling factors that may negatively affect the interview, strategies for managing the first and ongoing interviews, evaluation of clinical symptoms and how to end the process effectively as well as observational techniques, the features of clinical interview, verbal and non-verbal communication, effective listening, comprehension and feedback will be addressed and thoroughly held.

This course focuses on analyzing data related to several research problems from the field of Psychology. Students combines their prior gains from the courses of statistics and research methods with the studies of this course content and analyze the new psychological problems by using the SPSS program. After analyzing the data, they report the results in APA style. Distributions, percentiles, standard scores, item analysis and norms are widely studied as part of course content that form basic talents in interpreting and using the psychological tests. One-way between subject ANOVA,One-way within subject ANOVA, Factorial ANOVA, Mix-Design ANOVA and Multiple Regression related problems are also studied as the part of course content.

The aim of the thesis study is to develop the ability to search the literature related to the advanced thesis topic together with the support of the thesis supervisor in a subject related to clinical psychology. Within the scope of the courses included in the program, this course aims to provide students with essential abilities to prepare the research question based on literature, to use the data collection tool, to collect and analyze appropriate data, to tabulate and interpret research findings, to make conclusions from research findings and to be able to make suggestions, and to be able to report the research and defend the research. The initial process starts after the approval of the ethics committee at CIU. At the end of the study, thesis presentation and board approval determine the graduation status. At the end of the course, there is a presentation of graduate student's work in the presence of the jury determined by the thesis department.

In this course, student is required to explore the theory and practice of clinical supervision and control in the direction of theories or theories in which he / she is trained and to understand the specific issues / debates in this field. For this purpose, firstly, theoretical information about the related psychotherapy approach is summarized. Throughout the course, the student analyzes terms related to the perspective of individuals who represent other aspects of ethnic / racial, sexual, gender, and diversity. In the second phase of the course, within the context of supervision, clinical application procedures, the way the methods and techniques are used and the way the case formulation is conceptualized is learned. A significant part of the supervisory process is based on the ability of the learner to gain personal awareness, the careful handling of errors and weaknesses, and the skills to be developed.

This course covers the key steps involved in preparing a graduate thesis. Students will choose a potential thesis topic during this class. Also, they will learn how to do a proper library search, how to pull up articles from various databases, learn how to read these articles and translate the findings into layman's terms. In addition, students will learn the dynamics associated with paraphrasing and plagiarism. Students will learn how to prepare their thesis proposal form, how to fill out the CIU ethics committee form, and prepare the necessary documents required to submit to the ethics committee. By the end of the course, students will have selected their thesis advisor as well as have all of their paperwork, associated with their thesis topic, ready for submission prior to starting their thesis. Also, students will be expected to present their research proposal at the end of the class.

This course focuses on effective learning to share psychological knowledge based on quantitative and qualitative data with experts and non-experts. In this context, starting with the definition of psychological tests, their functions, purposes of use, classification of tests and developmental history; learn the basic concepts of measurement and evaluation, and acquire the qualities (reliability, validity, usability, standardization) required to be found in measurement tools. In addition, the points and ethical rules to be considered in the use and evaluation of psychological tests are defined in this course. Lastly, in order to have the necessary technical and equipment knowledge for derste, psychological measurement and evaluation, observing in the test environment, reporting of test findings, basic statistical processes on the measurement results and reporting processes are discussed.

Psychotherapy theories are compared to general human and mind models, the focus of change, the position of therapist, the roles and responsibilities of therapist and therapist in change. In addition, current issues of clinical psychology, research techniques, evaluation methods, psychotherapy approaches, historical development, basic theoretical models and specialization areas are covered. Ethics which encompasses individuals, means and methods as an important aspect of the discipline of psychology is an important theme in psychological practices in clinical arena, conducting and publishing research, school-based practices, in training and inspecting trainees, developing various techniques, social cases, institutional and organizational consultations. Within the context of learning the professional ethics, it is expected that current issues, cases and circumstances will be considered and ethical dilemma cases will be discussed, agreed and implemented. In order to acquire both ethical sensitivity and ethical competence in the formal education phase, the applications will be transferred to the students in the context of the following regulations and principles: Ethics, Ethics in Psychology, APA, TPD Code of Ethics, TPD Code of Ethical Processes, and Ethical Case Analysis.

In this course, students will be provided with basic information about group psychotherapy together with practical application. It is aimed to introduce group therapy techniques. It is aimed to learn the healing properties of the group, the points to be considered during group creation and to make inferences about how development groups are formed. Ethical principles in group therapy and dynamics of group therapy will be discussed. It will be ensured that they have information about the advantages and limitations over individual therapy and about what group therapy practices are according to different theories. Within the scope of this course; preventive mental health care practices are discussed in the context of risk factors and protective/preventive interventions, taking into account the possible negative effects of contemporary life style and changing social conditions on individuals. In this context, the course deals with the definition, history and general framework of preventive mental health services, national and international evidence-based practices. The course also examines the theoretical foundations of trauma, crisis intervention, psychological first aid, preventive/protective mental health services, its programs and program development. The students taking the course will enrich the content by preparing various presentations on the topics of the course. The learning of the chemical neurotransmission mediated by the disease effect, and its effects on the nervous system, is taken as basis. The course deals with mental processes such as sensation, perception, learning and memory, linguistic functions, higher mental processes such as reasoning and abstraction and executive functions. Processes are discussed at the behavioral level within a framework of information processing. Practical applications at everyday living, education and working environments are discussed. The course aims to provide the students with a brief introduction towards carrying out mental processes; how perceptual information enters the mind, how attention is used to select from the array of available incoming sensory information, how knowledge is organized in memory, how new information is added to memory, how information is retrieved from memory, and how information is conveyed to others through language.

This course is an in-depth study of the brain based on basic neuro-anatomy such as major lobes, structures, fibers, connections and the nervous system in relation to behavior and mental process. Course treats the historical background and the philosophical formulations pertaining to neuropsychology during the developmental part of it. Students gain basic concepts and theoretical approaches in graduate level and gain skills in interpreting physiological basis of behavioral & cognitive functions. It introduces the methods and techniques of neuropsychology with special emphasis on brain scanning methods and neuropsychological tests. The effects of disease, disorders and brain lesions on mental and behavioral processes are discussed within the context of clinical neuropsychology by relating with brain structures and neuropsychological tests.

The course covers a general overview of the definition of the field of clinical psychology; the educative and ethical issues in the field; who is the clinical psychologist and what are the academic and practical obligations of the profession; the role and status of a clinical psychologist in the course of diagnosing assessing and treating clients within the boundaries of team work or individual practice. The professional identity of a clinical psychologist, the working areas or units (clinics, universities, hospitals, private practice, community centers etc.) are to be emphasized and defined as well, to clarify the discriminative characteristics of the profession by itself.
