Important Study on Robotic Surgery by CIU Academic

Assist. Prof. Dr. Fuat Uyguroğlu, a faculty member in the Department of Computer Engineering at Cyprus International University (CIU), gave a seminar titled “Computer-Aided Surgical Skill Assessment: Automated Skill Assessment in Robotic Surgery” as part of the ISE Seminar Series organized by the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Miami.

During the seminar, Assist. Prof. Dr. Uyguroğlu shared his research on the automated assessment of surgical skills using video footage as an alternative to evaluations conducted by experts. He discussed his previous work conducted within the framework of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS), as well as his research on adapting these studies to robotic surgery through a research project supported by Intuitive Surgical, using the da Vinci platform and the Fundamentals of Robotic Surgery (FRS) framework.

In studies aimed at assessing various FRS training tasks, Assist. Prof. Dr. Uyguroğlu and his team utilize computer vision techniques such as object detection and segmentation, optical flow, multi-object tracking, and event detection. They are also conducting research on developing assessment criteria in collaboration with expert surgeons and validating the results obtained from video footage against expert evaluations.
