CIU Highlights Art’s Transformative Power
Prof. Dr. Cemil Atakara, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture at Cyprus International University (CIU), shared his views on the social responsibility and transformative power of art on the occasion of April 15, World Art Day. Atakara emphasized that art is not limited to aesthetic production alone, but has a multidimensional sphere of influence encompassing cultural, social, and ethical dimensions.
Stating that art has played a decisive role in shaping the identities of societies throughout history, Prof. Dr. Cemil Atakara said: “Art is not merely a form of visual expression; it is also a carrier of a system of thought, a culture of life, and collective memory. Creative approaches reflected in public spaces strengthen the character of cities while deepening individuals’ connection with their environment.”
Referring to the complex challenges of today’s world, Atakara noted that the role of art in such processes has become increasingly critical. He stated: “Art is a powerful means of communication that contributes to viewing differences not as sources of conflict but as sources of richness. Its transformative effect in fostering empathy, dialogue, and shared values makes a significant contribution to social healing and the development of a culture of peace.”
Atakara also highlighted that art has gained new dimensions alongside technological advancements, noting that digital production tools and AI-supported processes have expanded the boundaries of artistic expression. He added that this transformation has also brought ethical debates to the forefront, emphasizing that the role of the artist extends beyond technical skills to include critical thinking, social awareness, and cultural sensitivity.
