CIU Academic Publishes Process-Oriented Work on Architecture

Prof. Dr. Yonca Hürol, a faculty member of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Design and Architecture at Cyprus International University (CIU), has published a new book titled Tectonics as a Process in Architecture, released by Wiley in 2025. The book offers a fresh perspective on architectural production processes and invites readers to reconsider how buildings are conceived and realized. As Hürol’s third peer-reviewed international publication on tectonics, the work approaches architecture not as a finished product but as a multilayered and evolving process.
In the book, Prof. Dr. Hürol argues that building production processes are often perceived as linear and straightforward, whereas they are, in reality, shaped by numerous factors such as economic pressures, regulatory shortcomings, material constraints, and fragmented decision-making mechanisms. The study particularly highlights these dynamics within the context of Northern Cyprus, emphasizing how they create hidden challenges that hinder the production of high-quality architecture.
Hürol stresses that architecture is far more than an aesthetic façade, stating, “The value of a building is determined not only by how it looks but also by how it is constructed. When the process is disrupted, durability, aesthetics, quality, and design integrity inevitably suffer.”
The book also draws attention to shortcomings in construction industry standards and to instrumental approaches in which short-term gains are prioritized over long-term value. By examining architecture as a dynamic and at times fragile process, the publication seeks to make visible the complex conditions that shape the built environment. In this respect, it is expected to contribute to a more conscious, responsible, and high-quality approach to architectural practice and production.
