186th Anniversary of Pharmacy Celebrated at CIU
Cyprus International University (CIU) hosted a special ceremony to mark the 186th anniversary of scientific pharmacy. The event was crowned with a panel titled "Where is Pharmacy Heading in the World? Threats and Opportunities," bringing together leading figures in the field.
The ceremony was attended by the President of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) Ersin Tatar, President of the Cyprus Turkish Pharmacists' Association, Pharmacist Duygu Adahan Kuran, Secretary General of the Turkish Pharmacists' Association, Pharmacist Ali Erdem, former Istanbul MP and past President of the Turkish Pharmacists’ Association, Pharmacist Mehmet Domaç, former President of the Trabzon Chamber of Pharmacists and TEBEM Pharmaceuticals Board Member, Pharmacist Çetin Kansız, CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Halil Nadiri, and Dean of CIU Faculty of Pharmacy, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aslan.
In his speech, President Ersin Tatar highlighted that pharmacy is a profession that carries great responsibility and requires continuous development. He emphasized that lifelong learning has become inevitable in today’s digital world. Addressing the students, Tatar said, "As the pharmacists of the future, you must work hard, adhere to ethical values, and uphold your profession with the highest sense of responsibility."
CIU Rector Prof. Dr. Halil Nadiri stated in his speech that pharmacy is a profession based on science, prioritizing human health and demanding ethical responsibility. He affirmed that the university considers training qualified, research-focused individuals in this field as one of its core missions. Prof. Dr. Nadiri also noted that the Faculty of Pharmacy has been accredited by the Germany-based AHPGS, ensuring international quality assurance, and the faculty has contributed to global collaborations through its academic institutional membership with the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP).
President of the Cyprus Turkish Pharmacists' Association, Pharmacist Duygu Adahan Kuran, underlined that pharmacy is an indispensable profession for human and public health, stating, “We are the first point of contact for patients and the most accessible healthcare consultants.” Kuran marked the 186th anniversary of scientific pharmacy in both Turkey and the TRNC, drawing attention to the profession’s service-oriented structure.
During the panel held as part of the ceremony, CIU Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aslan, Secretary General of the Turkish Pharmacists’ Association Pharmacist Ali Erdem, Pharmacist Mehmet Domaç, and Pharmacist Çetin Kansız shared insights on the significance of the day. The event concluded with the video screening and awards ceremony of the 3rd International Patient Information Competition.
